Contraindications
- Pregnancy: Avoid laser hair removal during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and skin sensitivity. Wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
-
Skin Sensitivity: Those with sensitive skin or prone to keloid scarring might react negatively to laser treatments. A patch test is recommended.
- Active Skincare Ingredients: Active ingredients such as AHA's, BHA's and retinols should be avoided 3 - 5 days pre-treatment.
-
Certain Medications/Prescriptions: Individuals using medications or prescriptions oral or topical such as the following: antibiotics, accutane, cortisone, or retinoids. Disclose all relevant information to your technician.
-
Sun Exposure or Tanning: Recent sun exposure or tanning increases the risk of burns and hyperpigmentation from laser treatment. Avoid sun exposure before sessions.
-
Active Infections: Skin conditions like active acne, eczema, or psoriasis can worsen with laser treatment. Address the condition before laser sessions.
-
Chemical Peels or Dermabrasion: Allow time for skin healing after recent chemical peels or dermabrasion before undergoing laser treatment.
-
Skin Cancer: Consult a dermatologist if you have a history of skin cancer or suspicious moles in the treatment area.
-
Skin Type and Hair Color: Laser effectiveness varies by skin tone and hair color. People with very dark or light/blonde hair might not be suitable candidates.
Pre-Treatment
-
Avoid Sun Exposure: Minimize sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks before your session. Tanned skin can increase the risk of complications and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
-
Shave the Area: Shave the treatment area the day before your appointment. This ensures that the laser targets the hair follicles beneath the skin rather than the surface hair.
-
Avoid Waxing and Plucking: Refrain from waxing, plucking, or threading the hair in the treatment area for at least four to six weeks prior to your session. The laser targets hair follicles, which need to be present for the treatment to be effective.
-
Avoid Chemical Peels and Retinol: If you use skincare products containing retinol or have had chemical peels recently, it's advisable to avoid these in the treatment area for at least a week before your session.
-
Stay Hydrated: Ensure you're well-hydrated in the days leading up to your session. Hydrated skin can respond better to the laser treatment.
-
Cleanse and Exfoliate: Gently cleanse and exfoliate the treatment area before your session to remove any makeup, oils, or dead skin cells. This can improve the effectiveness of the laser treatment.
-
Avoid Perfumes and Lotions: On the day of your appointment, avoid applying perfumes, lotions, or other products to the treatment area. Clean, product-free skin allows for better laser penetration.
Post-Treatment Care
-
Avoid Sun Exposure: Shield the treated area from direct sunlight for at least a week. Use sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher if sun exposure is unavoidable.
-
Cool Compress: If you experience any mild discomfort or redness, apply a cool compress to the treated area. Avoid using ice directly on the skin.
-
Gentle Cleansing: Cleanse the treated area gently with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat the area dry with a clean, soft towel.
-
Avoid Heat: Refrain from hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and strenuous exercises for at least 24 hours post-treatment.
-
Avoid Irritants: Avoid using products with strong fragrances, alcohol, retinoids, or exfoliants on the treated area for a few days.
-
No Scrubbing: Avoid scrubbing or aggressive rubbing of the treated area while bathing or showering.
-
Avoid Swimming: Steer clear of swimming pools, hot tubs, and other chlorinated water sources for at least 24 to 48 hours post-treatment.
-
Moisturize: Apply a soothing, fragrance-free moisturizer to the treated area to keep the skin hydrated and comfortable.
-
Avoid Fragrance: Skip using scented lotions, creams, and perfumes on the treated area until it has fully healed.
